On July 5, 2024, Edinburgh Castle’s esplanade became a ska-pop haven as Madness headlined the Castle Concerts summer series. The British icons delivered a performance brimming with nostalgia, irreverent charm, and unrelenting energy, captivating a diverse, fez-clad crowd against the fortress’s majestic backdrop.
Kicking off with the electrifying “One Step Beyond,” Madness surged through classics like “Embarrassment,” “Baggy Trousers,” and “Our House” with infectious vigor. Tracks from their 2023 chart-topping album Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie, their first UK number-one studio album, blended seamlessly, showcasing their enduring songcraft. Anthems like “House of Fun” and “It Must Be Love” sparked thunderous singalongs, while “Night Boat to Cairo” closed with a frenzied, skanking finale. Suggs’ razor-sharp banter, Lee Thompson’s dynamic sax, and Mike Barson’s masterful keyboards fueled a jubilant atmosphere, highlighting the band’s timeless chemistry.
Support acts Reverend and the Makers and The Zutons set a vibrant tone. Reverend and the Makers brought their indie-rock swagger, energizing the crowd, while The Zutons’ iconic “Valerie” and other hits ignited early singalongs, priming the audience for Madness’ onslaught. The esplanade’s open-air setting, framed by the castle’s grandeur, amplified the festival vibe, though some fans noted slow entry and pricey drinks. The six original members—Chris Foreman, Mark Bedford, Dan Woodgate, alongside the core trio—delivered a masterclass in ska-pop showmanship, their energy undimmed by decades.
Edinburgh’s multigenerational crowd danced under the summer sky, embracing every moment. Minor logistical hiccups faded against Madness’ infectious spirit, cementing their status as Britain’s cherished musical eccentrics. The castle walls echoed with joy, leaving fans buzzing, skanking, and singing long after the final note.
