On June 15, 2024, Plymouth Hoe’s Summer Sessions erupted into a vibrant celebration as Madness, the iconic British ska-pop legends, headlined the third night of the TK Maxx-sponsored festival. Against the stunning waterfront backdrop, the Camden Town stalwarts delivered a performance that was equal parts nostalgic and electrifying, drawing thousands of fez-wearing fans eager for a dose of their quirky charm.
The setlist was a masterclass in crowd-pleasing, kicking off with high-energy classics like “One Step Beyond” and “Embarrassment.” Tracks from their 2023 album C’est La Vie blended seamlessly with timeless hits such as “House of Fun,” “Baggy Trousers,” and “Our House,” each sparking mass singalongs. A surprising cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” with guitarist Chris Foreman on vocals, added a playful twist, showcasing the band’s enduring mischievous spirit. “Night Boat to Cairo,” paired with a sea of red fezzes, closed the night in euphoric fashion.
Supported by The Zutons, Lightning Seeds, and Hardwicke Circus, the evening offered over four hours of music, with Lightning Seeds’ “Three Lions” igniting a huge singalong. The six original members—frontman Suggs’ charisma, Lee Thompson’s sax flair, and Mike Barson’s keyboard mastery—proved their chemistry remains unmatched after four decades.
Despite some mixed fan reactions to newer material at other gigs, Plymouth’s crowd embraced every moment. The only hiccup was slow entry queues, but the festive atmosphere and Plymouth Hoe’s scenic allure more than compensated. Madness delivered a ska-soaked spectacle that left fans dancing under the stars, cementing their status as Britain’s beloved musical eccentrics.
