On July 4, 2024, Madness headlined the Lytham Festival at Lytham Green, Lancashire, delivering a performance rooted in their ska-pop catalog to a large crowd. The British band, known for their enduring hits, played to an enthusiastic audience on the coastal venue.
They opened with “One Step Beyond,” followed by staples like “Embarrassment,” “Baggy Trousers,” and “Our House.” Tracks from their 2023 album, Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie, their first UK number-one studio album, were included, blending with their older material. “House of Fun” and “It Must Be Love” prompted loud singalongs, and “Night Boat to Cairo” closed the set energetically.
Suggs led with his characteristic vocals and banter, while Lee Thompson’s saxophone and Mike Barson’s keyboards drove the sound. The six original members—Chris Foreman, Mark Bedford, Daniel Woodgate, and the core trio—performed cohesively, reflecting decades of experience. The open-air setting at Lytham Green suited the event, though some attendees reported slow entry queues and high bar prices.
The diverse crowd, spanning generations, engaged actively, dancing and singing throughout. Madness’ setlist and stage presence underscored their status as a key British act, maintaining relevance since the late 1970s. Despite minor logistical issues, the performance was well-received, with fans lingering after the show, singing and celebrating.
The event highlighted Madness’ ability to merge nostalgia with fresh material, reinforcing their place in UK music history. The Lytham Festival, enhanced by its seaside location, provided a fitting stage for their return.
