At Lincoln Castle’s historic grounds, Madness headlined the Lincoln Castle Concerts, part of the summer series, turning the medieval setting into a vibrant dancefloor. The British ska-pop icons delivered a performance blending nostalgia, mischief, and infectious joy, captivating a sold-out crowd of fez-clad fans.
Bursting onto the stage with “One Step Beyond,” Madness ignited the night, tearing through classics like “Embarrassment,” “Baggy Trousers,” and “Our House” with relentless vigor. Tracks from their recent album C’est La Vie slotted in smoothly, though hits like “House of Fun” and “It Must Be Love” sparked the loudest singalongs. A playful cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” led by guitarist Chris Foreman, brought roars of delight, while “Night Boat to Cairo” capped the night with a frenzied, fez-waving finale. Suggs’ cheeky banter and Lee Thompson’s sax swagger kept the atmosphere electric.
Support from The Zutons and local act The Hoosiers set a lively tone, with The Zutons’ “Valerie” warming up the crowd. The castle’s intimate, open-air setup amplified the festival feel, though some fans grumbled about slow entry and pricey drinks. The band’s six original members, anchored by Mike Barson’s keyboards, showcased a chemistry undimmed by decades, their performance a masterclass in ska-pop showmanship.
Lincoln’s diverse crowd—spanning generations—embraced every moment, skanking under the summer stars. Minor logistical hiccups aside, Madness delivered a night of pure, nutty euphoria, proving why they remain Britain’s most beloved musical eccentrics. The castle walls echoed with gladness long after the final note, a testament to their enduring, joyful legacy.
