Englefield House near Pangbourne, Berkshire, pulsed with ska-pop energy as Madness headlined the Heritage Live Concert series on July 19, 2024. The Camden Town legends delivered a raucous, unforgettable performance, weaving their iconic catalog with vibrant new material, solidifying their place as one of Britain’s most cherished bands.
Launching with the electrifying “One Step Beyond,” Madness ignited the crowd, tearing through timeless hits like “Baggy Trousers,” “House of Fun,” and “Our House,” each sparking fervent singalongs. Tracks from their 2023 chart-topping album Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie, their first UK number-one studio album, blended seamlessly, showcasing their knack for crafting fresh yet nostalgic anthems. The euphoric “Night Boat to Cairo” closed the night, sending the fez-clad crowd into a skanking frenzy. Suggs’ razor-sharp banter, Lee Thompson’s dynamic sax, and Mike Barson’s masterful keyboards radiated a chemistry honed since the 1970s, earning them a 2000 Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection.
Support acts Lightning Seeds and Old Time Sailors set a lively tone. Marking their 35th anniversary, Lightning Seeds, led by Ian Broudie, delivered crowd-pleasers like “Pure” and the anthemic “Three Lions,” igniting early cheers. Old Time Sailors opened with their immersive 19th-century seafaring melodies, played on traditional instruments, enchanting the audience. Englefield House’s lush, open-air grounds enhanced the festival atmosphere, despite some complaints about long queues.
Promoter Giles Cooper praised the “sensational show,” and Madness exceeded expectations, their infectious joy uniting generations. Minor logistical issues melted away as the estate resonated with euphoria, proving the nutty boys’ timeless magic remains unstoppable, leaving fans buzzing long after the final note.
