On July 22, 2023, Madness headlined the Splendour Festival at Wollaton Park, Nottingham, delivering a vibrant performance that electrified the crowd despite rainy weather. The ska legends, known for their “nutty sound,” brought their infectious energy to the festival’s 15th anniversary, a highly anticipated return since their 2009 Splendour slot. Fans, decked out in wellies and waterproofs, packed the main stage, ready to dance to classics like “Baggy Trousers,” “House of Fun,” “One Step Beyond,” and “Our House.” The setlist, drawing from their extensive catalog, included hits from their 2023 UK number-one album, Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie, though some newer tracks received mixed reactions compared to the timeless anthems that sparked mass singalongs.
The atmosphere was jubilant, with Madness’ showmanship—led by Suggs’ charismatic stage presence—igniting the crowd. Their ska rhythms and humorous edge, honed since the late ’70s, kept the energy high, cementing their status as a festival favorite. The performance was a highlight of the two-day event, which also featured Rudimental, Sugababes, and The Vaccines. Despite logistical challenges like lax security noted by some attendees, the band’s ability to get thousands skanking in the rain underscored their enduring appeal. Local acts, including Nottingham’s own Em, opened the stage, adding to the community vibe. Madness’ set was a nostalgic yet fresh celebration of their 40-year legacy, leaving fans buzzing and proving why they remain a cornerstone of British music
