If you think ska, you think Madness. The British ska-pop giants, beloved since the late ’70s, have been turning festival fields and concert halls upside down with their infectious energy and timeless hits. On Thursday, September 19, 2024, Madness brought their legendary live show to Martiniplaza in Groningen, Netherlands, as part of their Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie tour, and it was nothing short of spectacular.
With a colossal repertoire spanning 16 albums, Madness delivered a setlist packed with iconic anthems like One Step Beyond, Our House, Baggy Trousers, Embarrassment, and Night Boat to Cairo. These songs, just a sliver of their extensive catalogue, had the crowd skanking and singing along from start to finish. Known as ‘The Nutty Boys,’ the band’s theatrical flair and cheeky charm were on full display, perfectly matching the absurdly brilliant vibe of their latest album, Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie.
Madness’s live shows are the stuff of legend, blending high-octane performances with a playful, almost circus-like atmosphere. At Martiniplaza, they proved why they remain a must-see act, with frontman Suggs leading the charge and the band’s tight musicianship keeping the energy electric. Fans of all ages filled the venue, dancing to the ska rhythms and pop hooks that have defined Madness for decades.
For those lucky enough to attend, the Groningen gig was a masterclass in why Madness continues to reign supreme in the ska-pop world. From nostalgic classics to fresh tracks, the night was a joyous celebration of music, madness, and pure fun.
