Derby’s inaugural TK Maxx presents Derby Summer Sessions at Markeaton Park culminated in a thrilling Sunday finale on July 14, 2024, headlined by Madness. Formed in 1976 in Camden, the British ska-pop legends, with over 6 million albums sold and 15 UK Top 10 singles, electrified 15,000 fans in the Big Top tent. Hits like Our House, Baggy Trousers, and an encore of Night Boat to Cairo had the crowd dancing, led by charismatic frontman Suggs. Their quirky, upbeat style cemented their status as a UK treasure.
The day’s schedule was adjusted for the Euro 2024 final between England and Spain at 8:00 PM BST. Organizers opened gates at 2:00 PM, shifting performances by Madness, Rick Astley, The Lightning Seeds, and Deco earlier. Post-gig, a 9m by 5m LED screen broadcast the match, blending music and football fever. Fans joined The Lightning Seeds in singing Three Lions, the 1996 football anthem that hit No. 1 in the UK, amplifying the pre-match excitement.
Rick Astley, whose 1987 hit Never Gonna Give You Up boasts over 1 billion YouTube views, delivered soulful pop nostalgia. Rising act Deco opened with 80s-inspired synth-pop, setting a vibrant tone. The July 12–14 festival, also featuring Becky Hill and Tom Jones, marked a cultural milestone for Derby. Despite some noise complaints from nearby residents, the event’s inclusive atmosphere and stellar lineup created an unforgettable celebration of music and sport, uniting fans across generations.
