On July 26, 2024, Madness headlined the Live at Kirkstall Abbey series in Leeds, transforming the historic ruins into a ska-pop haven. Known for hits like “Our House,” “Baggy Trousers,” and “One Step Beyond,” the Camden legends, with a decades-spanning career, proved their enduring brilliance. Their 2023 chart-topping album, Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie, lauded for catchy, timeless tracks, showcased their ability to evolve while staying rooted in their ska-pop sound.
Madness opened with “One Step Beyond,” igniting a frenzied crowd. Classics like “House of Fun” and “It Must Be Love” sparked singalongs, while new tracks blended seamlessly, highlighting their vitality. “Our House” and “Baggy Trousers” evoked nostalgic euphoria, and “Night Boat to Cairo” closed with a skanking, fez-fueled finale, driven by Suggs’ sharp banter and Lee Thompson’s saxophone. Mike Barson’s keyboards anchored their infectious chemistry, captivating a multigenerational crowd.
Support acts amplified the night. The Zutons, riding a comeback with their 2024 album The Big Decider, delivered gritty indie-rock with hits like “Valerie.” The Pigeon Detectives brought high-energy anthems, while Hardwicke Circus, managed by Stiff Records co-founder Dave Robinson, kicked off with a ska-infused set reminiscent of Madness. Their album Fly The Flag, produced by Robinson, featured a track co-written with Suggs, reflecting their stylistic kinship. Robinson, who signed Madness to Stiff in 1979 and produced their iconic videos like “House of Fun,” fostered their early success, including betting on “It Must Be Love” as a top-five hit. His management of Hardwicke Circus bridges his storied past with new talent.
Despite slow entry queues, the abbey’s open-air setting, framed by ancient ruins, pulsed with euphoria. Madness’ joyous performance united generations, cementing their legacy as British music icons.
