On June 10, 2023, Madness headlined the Hello Festival at Grote Rietplas in Emmen, Netherlands, delivering a ska-infused spectacle that thrilled 17,000 attendees. The iconic British band, a long-sought act for the festival’s organizers, closed the night with a high-energy set, fulfilling a decade-long dream for No Limit Events. Under a sweltering summer sun, fans packed the main stage, erupting for classics like “Baggy Trousers,” “One Step Beyond,” and “Embarrassment,” which defined their ‘80s heyday. The set also featured tracks from their 2023 chart-topping album, Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie, blending fresh sounds with their signature nutty vibe.
Suggs, ever the charismatic frontman, commanded the crowd with wit and swagger, sparking mass singalongs and skanking in the festival tent. The atmosphere was electric, with Madness’ ska rhythms and playful antics proving timeless. The diverse lineup, including Nena, Son Mieux, Suzan & Freek, and Krezip, set a nostalgic yet vibrant tone, but Madness stole the show, their performance a testament to their enduring appeal. The Hello Festival, formerly Retropop, embraced its retro roots, with the Nederpop and Future stages showcasing Dutch talent like Kris Kross Amsterdam and La Fuente.
Despite the heat, the crowd’s energy never waned, fueled by Madness’ infectious grooves. The sold-out event, running from noon to 1 a.m., marked a triumphant return for the festival, known for its community spirit. Madness’ set was a joyous capstone, leaving fans buzzing and cementing their legacy as ska’s unrivaled showmen.
