At Margate’s Dreamland, Madness headlined the Summer Series, transforming the iconic amusement park into a ska-pop paradise. The British legends delivered a performance brimming with nostalgia, cheeky charm, and unrelenting energy, drawing a vibrant crowd of fez-wearing fans to the seaside venue.
Kicking off with the frenetic “One Step Beyond,” Madness set the tone, powering through classics like “Embarrassment,” “Baggy Trousers,” and “Our House” with infectious zeal. Songs from their 2023 album C’est La Vie blended seamlessly, though timeless hits like “House of Fun” and “It Must Be Love” ignited the loudest singalongs. A mischievous cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” fronted by guitarist Chris Foreman, added a raucous twist, while “Night Boat to Cairo” closed the night with a euphoric, skanking frenzy. Suggs’ witty banter and Lee Thompson’s lively sax kept the crowd buzzing.
Support acts The Zutons and Soft Play warmed up the evening, with The Zutons’ “Valerie” sparking early cheers. Dreamland’s retro, open-air setting, framed by amusement rides, created a perfect festival vibe, though some fans noted slow entry queues and steep bar prices. The band’s six original members, anchored by Mike Barson’s keyboards, showcased a chemistry that remains electric after decades, their showmanship a testament to their enduring appeal.
Margate’s multigenerational crowd embraced every moment, dancing under the coastal sky. Despite minor logistical gripes, Madness delivered a night of pure, nutty joy, cementing their status as Britain’s beloved musical eccentrics. Dreamland echoed with gladness, proving the band’s ska magic is as potent as ever.
